RC car scales tell you how the size of a remote control vehicle compares with the full-size vehicle it represents.
For example, a true 1:10 scale model has linear dimensions approximately one-tenth those of its full-size reference vehicle, while a 1:24 model represents the same dimensions at one twenty-fourth scale.
The important rule is simple:
As the scale denominator gets lower, the RC vehicle becomes larger.
So a 1:5 RC car is much larger than a 1:18 or 1:32 model.
Understanding RC car scale sizes makes it easier to compare vehicles, estimate how much storage or driving space they may need, and choose a model that fits the way you plan to use it.
What Is RC Scale?
RC scale shows how the model’s dimensions compare with those of the real vehicle.
For example:
1:10 scale = 1 unit on the RC vehicle represents 10 of the same units on the full-size vehicle.
If a real vehicle were 180 inches long, a perfectly scaled 1:10 model would be:
180 ÷ 10 = 18 inches
At 1:18 scale:
180 ÷ 18 = 10 inches
The same principle can be applied to width, height and wheelbase.
However, an RC car scale size does not guarantee one exact length. Two vehicles carrying the same scale label can still have different dimensions because the full-size vehicles or body styles they represent may be different.

RC Car Scale Chart
This RC car scale chart uses the same hypothetical 180-inch full-size vehicle for every example so the different ratios can be compared directly.
| RC Scale | Approx. Length | Relative Size |
|---|---|---|
| 1:5 | 36 in / 91.4 cm | Very large |
| 1:8 | 22.5 in / 57.2 cm | Large |
| 1:10 | 18 in / 45.7 cm | Large |
| 1:12 | 15 in / 38.1 cm | Medium-large |
| 1:14 | 12.9 in / 32.7 cm | Medium |
| 1:16 | 11.25 in / 28.6 cm | Medium |
| 1:18 | 10 in / 25.4 cm | Medium-small |
| 1:24 | 7.5 in / 19.1 cm | Small |
| 1:32 | 5.6 in / 14.3 cm | Very small |
This RC car size chart is an illustration, not a list of universal product dimensions.
A 1:10 pickup truck and a 1:10 sports car, for example, do not necessarily have the same overall length. Always check the measurements listed for the individual model when buying.
How Big Is a 1:5 Scale RC Car?
A 1:5 RC vehicle sits at the large end of commonly encountered RC scales.
Using our 180-inch reference vehicle:
180 ÷ 5 = 36 inches
That is about 91 cm long.
The same vehicle at 1:10 scale would measure only 18 inches, meaning the 1:5 version would be twice as long in this example.
This shows why larger scales can require considerably more storage and driving space.
What Size Is a 1:8 Scale RC Car?
Using the same 180-inch vehicle:
180 ÷ 8 = 22.5 inches
That equals roughly 57 cm.
A 1:8 model therefore sits between the very large 1:5 format and the popular 1:10 size when all three represent the same full-size vehicle.
What Size Is a 1:10 Scale RC Car?
If you're wondering how big is 1/10 scale RC car, the exact answer depends on the full-size vehicle being represented.
Using our example:
180 ÷ 10 = 18 inches
So the theoretical model would measure approximately 18 inches or 45.7 cm long.
A 1:10 truck, buggy, crawler and drift car can still have different actual measurements because their body styles and reference vehicles differ.

What About 1:12 and 1:14 RC Cars?
These scales sit between 1:10 and 1:16.
Using the same 180-inch reference vehicle:
1:12 = 15 inches / 38.1 cm
1:14 = approximately 12.9 inches / 32.7 cm
They provide useful middle points when comparing remote control car scale sizes, although the dimensions of an actual model should still be checked individually.
How Big Is a 1:16 Scale RC Car?
A 1:16 model represents the dimensions of its reference vehicle at one-sixteenth scale.
Using our example:
180 ÷ 16 = 11.25 inches
That equals approximately 28.6 cm.
Compared with the same vehicle at 1:10 scale, the 1:16 version would be noticeably more compact and require less physical storage space.
You can also compare the listed dimensions of models such as our 4x4 RC Buggy with other RC vehicles before deciding which size suits you.
How Big Is a 1:18 Scale RC Car?
A 1:18 scale model represents the dimensions of the reference vehicle at one-eighteenth scale.
Using the same 180-inch example:
180 ÷ 18 = 10 inches
That is approximately 25.4 cm.
The difference between 1:16 and 1:18 may appear small on paper, but the 1:18 model is still smaller when both represent the same vehicle.
We have a separate guide covering this scale in much more detail: How Big Is a 1:18 Scale RC Car?.

How Big Is 1:24 Scale?
At 1:24 scale, a 180-inch reference vehicle becomes:
180 ÷ 24 = 7.5 inches
That is approximately 19 cm long.
Because of their smaller footprint, 1:24 models can take up considerably less room than vehicles at 1:10 or 1:5 scale.
Compact drift models are one example of where smaller dimensions can make sense. See our Mini Remote Control Drift Cars Set for an example of a miniature RC format.
How Big Is 1:32 Scale?
Using that same 180-inch full-size vehicle:
180 ÷ 32 = approximately 5.6 inches
That equals around 14.3 cm.
This illustrates how compact the smaller end of the RC car sizes range can become when compared with larger 1:10, 1:8 or 1:5 vehicles.
Again, that does not mean every 1:32 RC car measures exactly 5.6 inches. The calculation only applies to our 180-inch example.
Why Two RC Cars at the Same Scale Can Be Different Sizes
Scale is a ratio, not a universal product measurement.
Imagine a full-size pickup truck and a small sports car. The pickup is longer and taller in real life.
If both vehicles are reproduced accurately at 1:10 scale, the pickup model should still be physically larger than the sports car model.
Body shells, tyres, suspension, chassis design and how strictly the manufacturer follows true proportions can also affect the final dimensions.
That's why RC car sizes should ultimately be compared using the actual length, width and height listed on each product.
How to Tell What Scale Your RC Car Is
The easiest method is to check the product page, packaging, manual or markings on the vehicle.
If the scale isn't listed, you may be able to estimate it when the RC model represents a recognizable real vehicle.
Use:
Full-size vehicle length ÷ RC vehicle length = approximate scale denominator
For example:
A real vehicle is 180 inches long.
The RC version is 18 inches long.
180 ÷ 18 = 10
That suggests an approximate 1:10 scale.
This method is less useful for fantasy vehicles, stunt toys or models that are not intended to reproduce a particular full-size vehicle accurately.

Which RC Car Scale Should You Choose?
There isn't one best remote control car scale for everyone.
Start by considering where you plan to drive and store the RC car.
Larger RC vehicles take up more storage room and generally need more open driving space. Smaller models are easier to store and transport and may be more practical when physical space is limited.
Then consider the type of driving you want to do.

RC Car Scale FAQs
What are the scale sizes for RC cars?
RC vehicles are available in many sizes. Common examples include 1:5, 1:8, 1:10, 1:12, 1:14, 1:16, 1:18, 1:24 and 1:32.
The scale describes the ratio between a model and its full-size reference vehicle.
What are the sizes of RC cars?
There is no single set of dimensions for each scale.
An RC car sizes chart can provide useful estimates, but the actual length, width and height depend on the model, body style and vehicle being represented.
Is 1:10 bigger than 1:18 scale?
Yes.
When both models represent the same full-size vehicle, the 1:10 version will be larger because its measurements are divided by 10 rather than 18.
Does the same RC scale always mean the same length?
No.
Scale describes a ratio rather than a fixed length. Two vehicles can have the same scale while having different physical dimensions.
Does a smaller scale number mean a bigger RC car?
Yes, when comparing models of the same reference vehicle.
For example:
1:5 is larger than 1:10
1:10 is larger than 1:18
1:18 is larger than 1:24
1:24 is larger than 1:32
What to Remember
RC car scales become much easier to understand once you treat the number as a ratio.
Large-scale models such as 1:5 and 1:8 occupy considerably more physical space, while 1:24 and 1:32 models are much more compact. Popular middle sizes such as 1:10, 1:16 and 1:18 sit between those extremes.
Use an RC car scale chart to understand the general relationship between sizes, but don't rely on the scale number alone when buying.
Always check the actual length, width and height of the individual model so you know exactly how much space the RC vehicle will occupy.
